GitLab flaw rated 10 out of 10 now on the exploited list

Run the fixed GitLab release for your branch from GitLab's advisory, using GitLab's official packages or images; if you build GitLab on your own Ruby or image, also update Ruby to 3.3.13, 3.4.12 or 4.0.9.

PHP2Shell now hitting Palo Alto firewall admin pages

Install the PAN-OS hotfix for your release (for example 12.2.4-h1, 11.2.16-h1 or 11.1.16-h4) and block internet access to the management interface.

The short version

  • If your team hosts its own GitLab, update it today; attackers already tried to break into one well known open-source project's server with this flaw.
  • If your company uses Palo Alto Networks firewalls, ask IT to install this week's fix and make sure the admin page can't be reached from the internet.
  • If you look after Linux servers, watch for a kernel update over the next few days and install it; a fix is out on Debian, SUSE, Oracle and Amazon Linux but not yet on Ubuntu or Red Hat.
  • If your company uses Cisco firewalls for remote VPN access, ask IT to install Cisco's new update, because attackers are using a bug to knock them offline.
  • If you code on a Mac, the git and curl that come with macOS still accept the leaked eMudhra certificates, so keep the manual fix in place.

Today's stories

CRITICAL

GitLab code-execution flaw exploited, Alpine rebuilds its server

CISA added CVE-2026-97229 (CVSS 10.0) to its exploited list on 29 October: a crafted regular expression in a CI configuration can let an attacker with no login run code on a GitLab server. Alpine Linux says an attacker spent days probing its GitLab with this flaw, so it rebuilt the server and reset all passwords, though it found no sign the attack worked and says its official image builds are clean. Use the fixed release for your branch in GitLab's advisory, from GitLab's own packages or images; if you run GitLab on your own Ruby or container image, upgrading GitLab is not enough and Ruby must also be 3.3.13, 3.4.12 or 4.0.9 or later. This is a different flaw from CVE-2026-110264, the 10 out of 10 GitLab flaw fixed on 21 October. The Hacker News (opens in a new tab)

CRITICAL

PHP2Shell attacks hit Palo Alto firewalls

Palo Alto Networks confirmed attackers are using the PHP2Shell flaws (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) against PAN-OS management interfaces exposed to the internet, and GreyNoise has seen at least six successful exploitations so far. Install the hotfix for your PAN-OS release, such as 12.2.4-h1, 11.2.16-h1, 11.1.16-h4 or 10.2.10-h42 (a few hotfixes are due by 30 October), and allow management access only from trusted internal addresses. Everywhere else, PHP should be on 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35. The Hacker News (opens in a new tab)

Linux kernel TCP bug: root exploit shown, Ubuntu and RHEL still waiting

CVE-2026-98432 is a race condition in how Linux sets up IPv4 TCP connections, present since kernel 4.4; the kernel team rates it 9.8 and Anthropic says its AI model wrote an exploit that gives a remote attacker root on servers with a multipath TCP listener. Debian, SUSE, Oracle Linux and Amazon Linux have shipped fixed kernels, but Ubuntu and Red Hat have not given a date, and Red Hat scores it lower because the race is hard to win. Install your distribution's kernel update as soon as it lands and reboot; no attacks have been reported yet. The Hacker News (opens in a new tab)

Cisco firewall VPN bug exploited to crash devices

Attackers are exploiting CVE-2026-76418 (CVSS 8.6) to reboot Cisco Secure Firewall ASA and FTD devices remotely without logging in, when the SSL remote-access VPN uses secondary authentication. CISA added it to its exploited list on 29 October. Update ASA to 9.24.1.27, 9.23.1.48, 9.22.3.200, 9.20.4.50 or 9.18.4.96 and FTD to 10.1.1, 10.0.3, 7.7.14, 7.6.7, 7.4.9 or 7.2.13. Spies used an old Cisco SD-WAN flaw to steal network encryption keys

Cisco Talos found KeyDrift malware on Catalyst SD-WAN controllers hacked through CVE-2026-20127 (CVSS 10.0, fixed in February), built to copy the keys that encrypt traffic between an organisation's sites. Anyone who has not yet patched should move to a fixed release such as 20.9.8.2, 20.12.6.1 or 20.15.4.2 and check controllers for unexpected services. The Hacker News (opens in a new tab)

macOS git and curl still trust leaked eMudhra certificates

The git, curl and python3 that Apple ships with macOS still accept the compromised eMudhra certificates, so someone on the network path could tamper with clones or steal tokens, and macOS 27.2 undid the manual fix. Remove the affected roots by hand again after every macOS update until Apple ships a fix, and include macOS CI runners. eMudhra patch tracker (opens in a new tab)
