PHP2Shell: millions of attack attempts, and a working exploit is close

Update to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35, and set session.upload_progress.enabled to 0 until PHP's next release.

The short version

  • If your website runs on PHP, including WordPress, Drupal or Joomla, make sure it was updated this week; attackers are scanning for sites that weren't.
  • If your company runs its own GitLab server, update it to the latest release now.
  • Apps written in Python that handle uploaded pictures should be using Pillow 13.0.0, the image library that just fixed several serious bugs.
  • If you use a Mac's built-in command-line tools, they may still trust some leaked security certificates; ask your IT team to apply the fix on the eMudhra tracker page.
  • Change any default or weak passwords on your firewall or VPN, and keep those devices updated; a criminal group stole more than 70,000 logins from them.

CRITICAL

PHP2Shell: attacks surge, but none confirmed working yet

Cloudflare saw attempts against the two PHP2Shell flaws climb into the millions, mostly trying to install a Mirai botnet, yet Sophos, Wordfence and others report no confirmed break-ins because real servers' memory protections are defeating the public exploits. VulnCheck says it has built a way past those protections, and researchers warn a working exploit could spread to botnets within days. Update to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35; PHP also disclosed a separate, unlikely code-execution path (CVE-2026-115560) with no patch yet, so set session.upload_progress.enabled to 0. Ruby regex bugs behind four critical GitLab flaws

Three memory bugs in Ruby's regular expression engine let a crafted pattern run code, which gave GitLab four critical flaws, the latest two rated 10.0 and needing no login. Any Ruby app that builds a regular expression from user input is affected, and Ruby 3.2 and older get no fix. Update Ruby to 4.0.9, 3.4.12 or 3.3.13, and self-managed GitLab to the fixed release for your branch in GitLab's advisory for CVE-2026-110264. The Hacker News (opens in a new tab)

Pillow fixes image bugs that can run code

Pillow, the Python image library downloaded about 436 million times a month, fixed several flaws rated 9.2, including one where opening a crafted FlashPix image can run commands when the optional olefile package is installed. No attacks are known. Upgrade to Pillow 13.0.0 (it needs Python 3.11 or newer) and rebuild containers and images that bundle an older copy. The Hacker News (opens in a new tab)

Macs' command-line tools still trust the leaked certificates

Apple now blocks the eight compromised eMudhra intermediate certificates in Safari and apps, but macOS's built-in curl, git, python3 and openssl check against a certificate file that hasn't been updated, so someone holding the leaked keys could impersonate sites to them. Bottlerocket and Godot fixes are also still pending. The tracker gives the steps to clean that file; elsewhere, update Node.js to 26.12.1, 24.22.1 or 22.23.4, Python certifi to 2026.10.19 and Electron apps to their latest builds. eMudhra tracker (opens in a new tab)

Windows bootkit slips past Secure Boot on patched PCs

Kaspersky found BlackX, a copy of the BlackLotus bootkit linked to the China-aligned APT41 group, abusing an old Secure Boot bug on Windows machines that installed the patch but never applied Microsoft's manual revocation steps. The attackers already need admin rights, but it lets them hide below Windows and disable security tools. Admins should apply Microsoft's Secure Boot revocations, which block the old Windows Production PCA 2011 certificate. The Hacker News (opens in a new tab)

70,000 firewall and VPN logins stolen

Group-IB and NyxLab tied a criminal access broker linked to the Qilin ransomware gang to break-ins at organisations worldwide through exposed firewalls and VPNs, using known FortiWeb and PAN-OS flaws (CVE-2025-64446 and CVE-2026-0257) and password guessing. Patch those devices, remove default or weak passwords, and turn on multi-factor login for VPN access. The Hacker News (opens in a new tab)
