## Headline alerts

- **Next.js has two remote takeover flaws: update today** Update Next.js to 16.4.1 or later, or 15.5.28 on the 15 line, then redeploy.
- **PHP2Shell is now being broadly exploited** Update to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35 and restart the web server.

## The short version

- If your website or app is built with Next.js, ask your developers to update it today and redeploy.
- If your website runs on PHP, including WordPress, and it hasn't been updated this week, update it now or take it offline until you can.
- Developers should update Node.js and Bun on laptops, build servers and container images, not just in production.
- If you host anything on Railway, change every password and API key you stored there.
- Keep installing the updates your computer and phone offer; some security certificates could still be faked this week.

## Today's stories

### Next.js: two no-login remote takeover flaws

Severity: critical

Vercel fixed two flaws rated 9.5 that let a stranger run code on a Next.js server, one through the Image Optimization feature on Linux and one in App Router apps using cached functions. Every version from 10.0.0 to 16.4.0 is affected by at least one. Update to 16.4.1 or later (15.5.28 on the 15 line), which also pulls in the fixed sharp 0.35.5.

### PHP2Shell attacks started before the patch

Severity: critical

Amazon says attackers were already trying the two PHP flaws on 17 October, four days before the fix, and that they are now broadly exploited, though it's unclear how many attempts succeed. The UK's NCSC says to patch PHP servers now or take them offline. Update to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35.

### Node2Shell: Node.js and Bun need updating

Severity: high

A bug in the Brotli decompression built into Node.js can crash an app or possibly let an attacker run code when it unpacks hostile data, for example a request body sent to Express 5 or a response fetched from someone else's server. Researchers got code running in the lab against an unmodified build, but no real attacks are reported yet. Update to Node.js 26.12.1, 24.22.1 or 22.23.4 and Bun 1.4.4, and rebuild container images.

### Linux file-sharing bug with no fix yet

Severity: high

Two flaws rated 9.0 in KSMBD, the Linux kernel's built-in Windows file-sharing server, were posted publicly before any patch, and one needs no login on port 445. Most servers don't run KSMBD, and Red Hat doesn't ship it by default. If yours does, turn it off or block port 445 from the internet until a kernel fix lands.

### LiteLLM: the latest Docker tags were poisoned too

Severity: high

LiteLLM's post-mortem says its release pipeline was hijacked on 21 October, and for about two hours the latest, main-latest and main-stable Docker Hub and GHCR tags pointed at the malicious 1.107.0 image, not just the PyPI wheels. Anything that pulled those tags in that window should be rebuilt and its secrets rotated. Use litellm 1.106.2.

### Railway breach: rotate your stored secrets

Severity: notable

The hosting platform says an intruder reached the systems holding customer environment variables and, for some users, read the decrypted values, and a researcher linked it to drained crypto wallets. Rotate every API key, database password and registry credential kept in Railway, and check those services' logs.

| Item | Where to look | Affected versions | Fixed / safe | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| next (npm) | package.json and lockfiles of web apps | 10.0.0 to 15.5.27, and 16.0.0 to 16.4.0 | 15.5.28, 16.4.1 or later | Also confirm the resolved sharp version is 0.35.5 or later |
| PHP runtime | Server packages, Dockerfiles and base images, hosting panels | 8.5.0-8.5.11, 8.4.0-8.4.26, 8.3.0-8.3.35, 8.2.0-8.2.34, and 8.1 or older | 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, 8.2.35 | Distro builds: changelog should list CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 |
| Node.js runtime | Developer machines, CI runners, Dockerfiles and base image tags | Before 22.23.4, 24.22.1, 26.12.1; lines 20, 23, 25 and older get no fix | 22.23.4, 24.22.1, 26.12.1 or later | CVE-2026-111497; images pinned to an older tag stay vulnerable |
| Bun runtime | Developer machines, CI runners, Dockerfiles | Before 1.4.4 | 1.4.4 or later | Same Brotli flaw as Node.js |
| litellm (PyPI and Docker) | Python lockfiles, requirements files, image tags and digests | 1.107.0, and latest or main tags pulled on 21 Oct | 1.106.2 | If 1.107.0 ran, report to owner: machine rebuild and secret rotation needed |
| KSMBD kernel module | Linux server inventory and enabled services | Any kernel with KSMBD enabled | No fix yet | Report which servers run it and whether port 445 is reachable from the internet |
| Pillow (PyPI) | Python lockfiles and requirements files | Before 13.0.0 | 13.0.0 or later | Several heap overflow fixes |
